Specific Admission Requirements

Prospective candidates for the course of study leading to the Postgraduate Degree may be: a) Graduates of the School of Drama of Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, b) Graduates of domestic and foreign University Departments of Theatre Studies, c) By exception, graduates of other university departments domestic and foreign.

Programme Profile

The course’s aim is to promote learning and research, to advance theatre studies and theatre arts, with performance at the core, in order to train both academics and artists for professional positions in public education and theatre.

The Programme lasts three semesters (fall semester, spring semester, fall semester of the following academic year) and offers five different specializations:


Specialization in Drama and Performance Theory


The programme of the specialization in Drama and Performance Theory comprises 3 theoretical courses (called Graduate Seminars) per semester, in the fall and spring terms respectively.  Each semester consists in 13 3-hour classes.

The fall semester of the following academic year is devoted to the research and writing of the Diploma thesis. The Diploma thesis must be the product of personal research and have originality. Its length must be between 15000 and 25000 words.


Specialization in Acting/Stage and Costume Design/Directing


The programme of the arstistic specializations comprises two types of courses during the fall and spring semesters: 2 theoretical seminars (Graduate Seminars), and 4 practical seminars (called Graduate Studios). The Graduate Seminars are 3 hours each, and the Graduate Studios 3-5 hours each. Both cover 13 weeks/semester.
The fall semester of the following academic year is devoted to the research and production of the Diploma Thesis, which in this case, consists in:

a) an aristic production, which is presented publically
b) a theoretical treatise, thematically linked to the aristic production. Its length must be between 6000 and 12000 words


Specialization in Theatre in Education


The programme of the specialization in Theatre in Education comprises two types of courses during the fall and spring semesters: 2 theoretical seminars (Graduate Seminars), and 4 practical seminars (called Graduate Studios). The Graduate Seminars are 3 hours each, and the Graduate Studios 3-5 hours each. Both cover 13 weeks/semester. The fall semester of the following academic year is devoted to the resarch and writing of the Diploma Thesis. The Diploma thesis must be the product of personal research and have originality. Its length must be between 15000 and 25000 words. It may be totally theoretical or it may combine theory with a practical project.

  • Each course amounts to 10 ECTS. The Diploma Thesis amounts to 30 ECTS. Grand Total: 90 ECTS.

  • Depending on the specialization they have chosen, graduates possess higher lever knowledge, capacities and skills in order to

    • approach theatre performance theoretically, historically and analytically
    • conceive and implement an artistic research project in the area of Acting
    • conceive and implement an artistic research project in the area of Stage and Costume Design
    • conceive and implement an artistic research project in the area of Stage Directing
    • conceive and implement a Theatre in Education research project
  • Depending on the specialization they have chosen, graduates have the knowledge, capacity and skills to work:

    • In the field of theatre studies research and academic career
    • In the artistic professions of the stage: actors, stage designers, costume designers, directors, lighting designers, dramaturgs
    • As administrators of state, municipal and private theater organizations (playbill curators, theater managers and moderators of educational programs etc)
  • Not applicable.

  • The qualification is a terminal award and allows access to doctoral studies.

  • A scale of 1 to 10 applies to the marks of each subject in the Hellenic Higher Education. Άριστα (Arista) Excellent: 8.50-10.00 Λίαν Καλώς (Lian Kalos) Very Good : 6.50- 8.49 Καλώς (Kalos) Good : 6.00-6.49. Ανεπιτυχώς (Anepitychos) Fail: 0-5.99. Minimum passing grade : 6.

  • The minimum duration for the course of studies is 18 months (90 ECTS), divided into three semesters as follows: a) Fall Semester (October-January) b) Spring Semester (February-May) c) Fall Semester of the following year (October-January). The last semester is dedicated to the preparation of the thesis. Each semester is equivalent to 30 ECTS (European Credit Transfer System) (1 ECTS=25-30 hours). Compliance with the ECTS (European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System) regulations started in 2007, when the Greek Legislation was harmonized with the relevant European one (Ministerial Decision no Φ5/89656/β3, art. 1-3, Hellenic Government Gazette no 1466/2007/B). Each course is credited with a number of ECTS(>=2) according to the studentworkload (contact hours, laboratory work, examination etc) and accumulation of credits (ECTS) is accomplished after successful completion of course.
